Few things exude excellence like a polished hardwood floor. Unfortunately, that timber doesn’t gleam naturally, it requires quite a bit of consistent floor maintenance.
In this article, we’re sharing our favorite ways to take great care of your hardwood floor and ensure it lasts a lifetime.
Know Your Floor
Knowing what kind of hardwood flooring you have makes all the difference when properly maintaining it.
Hardwood flooring comes in all shapes and sizes. From Red and White Oak to Birch and Timber, every floor has its own unique style.
If you’re having flooring installed, ask what kind of flooring it is exactly, and the best methods to maintain it.
A few types of flooring include:
- Factory-finished floors
- Site finished floors
- Wax floors
- Naturally oiled floors
Clean with the Right Tools
Cleaning hardwood flooring is often viewed as a challenge, but with the right tools, it can be a breeze.
The first step is identifying those tools. Hardwood flooring requires an extra dash of care and concern when it comes to everyday use.
Avoid scuffs and scrapes from furniture with felt pads on chair legs and tables. Be cautious of shoes, especially high heels, and opt to leave your footwear at the door.
A little cleaning effort here and there can make all the difference to your floor maintenance. Sweep daily or weekly with a great broom that doesn’t leave dirt behind.
Invest in a microfiber mop for those weekly or bi-weekly mops. Remember not to use too much water when mopping, as hardwood floors can absorb the water and may warp.
Buff It Out
We all love a clean, shiny hardwood floor, but sometimes wax simply doesn’t do the trick.
When all else fails, try a buffer instead!
While you can buff by hand, renting a buffing machine is a much better option for your hands and your time.
Starting in the farthest corner, work backward and buff towards the front door. Be mindful of corners and be sure to move any furniture along the way so you can get a deep and even shine.
Schedule a Professional Cleaning
Even the most meticulous home could use a deep clean every now and then.
Schedule a professional floor cleaning every two to three years. Special equipment and expertise will help your hardwood floor reclaim its original shine and sheer.
Hardwood floors that are regularly cleaned and also receive a professional cleaning every few years will last longer and stay shiny, unmarred, and hold their shape.
